SnelStart is good at what it was built for: accessible Dutch bookkeeping and invoicing for freelancers, small businesses and accountants. For administration, VAT, banking and invoicing it is a sensible, low-threshold choice. But SnelStart starts from the accounts and works outward: inventory, orders and logistics are bolt-on modules around a bookkeeping core, not the heart of the product, and CRM, eCommerce, service and production effectively live outside it. As soon as your operation gets more logistical - stock that has to be right, order flows, purchasing, warehouses - those modules tend to hit their ceiling and a patchwork of connected tools grows around the accounts. We saw exactly this with Rhea Vendors Benelux: they came from SnelStart and ran into the limits of the logistics modules in particular, which is why they moved to one Odoo platform. In one line: SnelStart organises your administration. Odoo organises your business.
When do you outgrow Snelstart?
Snelstart is a no-nonsense Dutch entry-level package, and as a starting point there is little to fault: affordable, familiar to accountants, and ample for a small administration. The question is not whether Snelstart is good, but when your company grows through it.
We saw that up close at Rhea Vendors: the vending machine manufacturer came partly from Snelstart and then rolled Odoo out across three countries in three phases, with the right fiscal localisation per entity and even a connected storage lift in the warehouse. That is no criticism of Snelstart - no entry-level package is built for that scale. It just shows where the ceiling sits.
That ceiling follows a fixed pattern: stock that needs more than a list, manufacturing or assembly, multiple entities or countries, and a team that must work inside the system rather than next to it. On each of those points, Snelstart users grow a shell of separate tools and spreadsheets around it - and that shell is the real signal.
We are an Odoo partner, so read this with that lens. A small Dutch company that only needs bookkeeping is fine at Snelstart and should mostly stay there. The switch pays off the moment you want the operation in there too - and it does not have to happen at once: start with accounting and sales, and add modules when the business is ready.

Bookkeeping is the core - and the edge of it
Odoo has complete accounting too, but it sits on the same model as sales, inventory, purchasing and production, so the books are the result of the operation rather than a separate world you feed.
SnelStart is genuinely good at bookkeeping, VAT, banking and invoicing, and that accessibility is its strength. The catch is that everything else - stock, orders, logistics - is built outward from the accounts rather than designed as an integrated operation.
If administration is essentially all you need, SnelStart is a logical, affordable choice. The question is whether it stays just administration.
Inventory and logistics: the first thing to creak
In Odoo, stock is a business-wide process: multi-warehouse, reservations, backorders, production consumption, returns, lot/serial tracking and valuation all read and write the same records, so the webshop, sales and finance agree.
SnelStart offers logistics and inventory in its higher plans, but it is an add-on around a bookkeeping core, not a depth-first warehouse engine. This is precisely where Rhea Vendors Benelux ran into limits - the logistics modules could not carry their operation.

CRM, Sales, Marketing, Website, eCommerce, Portal, Helpdesk, Field Service and Repair are native Odoo apps on the same data model as inventory and accounting.
SnelStart holds customer and invoice data, and connects to a webshop like Shopify via its integration marketplace, but CRM as a commercial engine, a B2B portal, service and repair are not its core - they become separate tools you connect.

Odoo keeps one source of truth across sales, inventory, purchasing, service and finance, so fewer separate tools and connectors are needed and the numbers reconcile by default.
SnelStart can be a fine bookkeeping heart, but CRM, a webshop, a WMS or stock tool, a CRM, reporting and Excel often keep running around it. That works while the operation is small, but it grows into a patchwork with duplicate data and connectors as the weak points.

The Small Business bundle from AFAS: administration, HR and payroll at one fixed price. Logical if staff and administration are your centre of gravity; it is not built for inventory, work orders and production.
Moneybird
Not an ERP and it does not pretend to be: modern invoicing and bookkeeping for freelancers and small SMBs. If your only complaint about SnelStart is the user experience, this is the cheapest route - and honestly a better choice than buying a system that is too big.
King Software
For years a solid Dutch choice for trade and logistics, but King shuts down on 31 October 2026. Switching to it now means deliberately boarding a discontinued track - better to compare the alternatives King users themselves are moving to.
Why SMBs look for a SnelStart alternative
In our own leads over the past period we see a consistent pattern: of the roughly fifteen companies that came to us from SnelStart, almost none were looking for a better accounting package. They were looking for inventory management, work orders for field staff, production with bills of materials, project administration with post-calculation or a B2B ordering portal for regular customers. Those are not shortcomings of SnelStart - they are things an accounting package by category does not do. The books are fine, but around them grows a shell of Excel files, paper work orders and separate tools that do not talk to each other.
Outgrown the accounting package, or just need something different?
This is the honest fork in the road. If your only complaint is that invoicing feels clunky or the interface dated, a light package like Moneybird is a fine answer and an ERP project is overkill - staying small is cheaper and wiser then. Three rules of thumb. One: if your pain sits only in invoicing and ease of use, pick a light package like Moneybird or stay where you are. Three: if your business now has real processes next to the administration - inventory, work orders, production, projects, portal - Odoo is usually the strongest choice, because it connects those processes natively to the accounting.
