How the Odoo partner model works
Odoo sells its software largely through partners: local implementation firms that supply licences, configure, integrate and support. Odoo SA builds the platform; the partner does the work at your company. That model has a big advantage for customers: you are not locked to one vendor. If your partner disappoints, you switch - your data and your Odoo environment simply move with you.
The Ready, Silver and Gold tiers are awarded by Odoo itself, based on things like the number of certified consultants per version, new implementations per year and customer retention. The bar is cumulative: a Gold partner has to perform again every year to stay Gold. That is why the field keeps moving - we ourselves temporarily dropped from Gold to Silver this year, and are working to fix that this quarter.
What stands out in the landscape
The concentration is steep: the ten biggest partners hold 60% of all published references, while 35 of the 51 partners sit at the Ready entry level - a good share of them with fewer than ten references. For you as a buyer that means: the list of 51 partners is in practice a choice between at most fifteen to twenty firms with proven implementation experience.
Also mind the difference between tier and size. There are Ready partners with more references than Silver partners, and Silver partners with more references than Gold partners. Tier measures certification and continuity; references measure volume. You need both to form a picture - and even then it says nothing about whether a partner understands your industry.
How to build a shortlist
Step 1: determine your segment. A five-person company on a tight budget has no use for an enterprise partner, and vice versa. Step 2: filter on industry experience - ask for references that resemble your operation, not for the total count. Step 3: talk to two or three firms and ask who will actually do the work: seniors or juniors, and following which method.
