Everyone talks about AI. But what does it actually get you in a wholesale business? And what does it cost?
The answer is simpler than you would think. AI works best on your own numbers. And you already have them: your orders, your customers, your prices, your stock, all in Odoo. AI can do something with that today. Not someday. Now.
Below are four things AI already does. When to start, and when to wait a bit. And why custom work costs far less than it used to.
Four things AI already does
No far-off future. Four things you can measure, running on numbers you already have.
| What AI does | How it works | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Forecast demand | Predicts how much of each item you need, per item and customer. | Sharper buying, fewer missed sales. |
| Read orders | Reads incoming orders from email or PDF. | Less re-typing, fewer errors. |
| Set up prices | Drafts customer-specific price lists and quotes. | Faster quoting, less manual work. |
| Watch margin | Spots items sitting still or leaking margin. | Adjust sooner, better margin. |
For none of these four do you have to track anything new. It is already in Odoo.
The questions we hear most
Customers almost never call us saying “we want something with AI”. They call with a problem they are sick of. Three examples:
“Can you get our email orders into Odoo by themselves?” A customer emails an order, sometimes as a PDF, sometimes loose in the text, and someone re-types it. Twice a week a line is wrong. AI reads the order and sets it up. Exactly the kind of job that comes back all day.
“Can AI set up the right price per customer?” Customer-specific prices loose in spreadsheets is asking for errors and margin leaks. For one client we built price lists you can download that fill a cart in one click. In four hours. AI can sit on top of that and suggest the right list per customer.
“Can our B2B portal get smarter?” The portal already gives your customer their own prices and order history. AI can add reorder suggestions based on what they bought before. That is how you keep customers like Decilux and Keizer International on one screen, with nobody needing to call.
When yes, and when not yet
Not everything in wholesale suits AI. The line is usually easy to see:
| Start with AI when… | Wait a bit when… |
|---|---|
| …your stock and prices are right in Odoo. | …your prices are still loose in Excel. |
| …it is something that happens often (orders, quotes, reordering). | …it only happens now and then. |
| …you can measure the result in time, stock or margin. | …nobody can say what a good result is. |
| …your buying, stock and sales are in one system. | …everything still sits in separate packages. |
Put AI on a shaky process and you mostly get faster mistakes. Get the basics right first. Then AI.
Why custom is only affordable now
A wholesaler always used to keep two lists. One had everything the software should do. The other had what it was allowed to cost. The good ideas got stuck in between. That gap has largely closed.
The reason is simple: building goes much faster with AI in the loop. People call it vibe coding. The work shifts. Less typing code, more thinking clearly about what you want, then checking it is right. That is where the craft sits.
An example. Those downloadable price lists above used to be a few days of work and two specialists. We built them in four hours. In the old world that client would never have started, because the budget was not there.
That is the real change. Not that custom got a bit cheaper. But that a whole pile of “nice, but too expensive” ideas suddenly became possible.
Where to start
Start small. Pick one process that hurts right now and where your numbers already line up. Usually that is reading orders or forecasting demand. Prove it there first. Works? Then the rest. And keep your Odoo in order, because that is what AI stands on.
