AI in hospitality: what it actually gets you

Everyone talks about AI. But what does it actually get you in a hospitality business? Four things it already does today, when to start and when not to, and why custom work costs far less now.

Everyone talks about AI. But what does it actually get you in your hospitality business? And what does it cost?

The answer is simpler than you would think. AI works best on your own numbers. And you already have them: your orders, your stock, your purchasing, your staff hours, all in Odoo. AI can do something with that today. Not someday. Now.

Below are four things AI already does. When to start, and when to wait a bit. And why custom work costs far less than it used to.

Four things AI already does

No far-off future. Four things you can measure, running on numbers you already have.

What AI doesHow it worksWhat you get
Forecast how busyPredicts how busy it will be, from your own sales.Better buying and rota, less waste.
Read receiptsReads supplier receipts and invoices and sets up the booking.Less re-typing, fewer errors.
Triage guest questionsReads email and reviews and drafts a reply.Faster response, less hassle.
Watch marginSpots which dishes leak margin or sit still.Sharper menu, better margin.

For none of these four do you have to track anything new. It is already in Odoo.

The questions we hear most

Customers almost never call us saying “we want something with AI”. They call with a problem they are sick of. Three examples:

“Can we predict how busy it will get better?” Buy too much and it is thrown-out food, too little and it is missed sales. AI forecasts how busy you will be from your own sales, the weather and the day, so your buying and rota line up. Less guessing, less waste.

“Can you book our supplier receipts automatically?” Re-typing a drawer full of receipts is exactly the dull work AI is made for. Reading the document and setting up the booking saves you the evening hours you should be spending on guests.

“Can the till just keep up with self-order and online?” Often you do not need custom, you need a good setup. Ons Broodje Bonaire runs its till, QR self-order, online ordering and time tracking in one Odoo, set up pragmatically in around 20 hours. You add AI only where it genuinely pays off.

When yes, and when not yet

Not everything in hospitality suits AI. The line is usually easy to see:

Start with AI when…Wait a bit when…
…your till and stock run on one system.…receipts still disappear in a drawer.
…it is something that happens often (buying, booking, busy days).…it only happens now and then.
…you can measure the result in waste, margin or time.…nobody can say what a good result is.
…till, stock and accounting are in one system.…everything still sits separately.

Put AI on a shaky process and you mostly get faster mistakes. Get the basics right first. Then AI.

Why custom is only affordable now

A hospitality business always used to keep two lists. One had everything the software should do. The other had what it was allowed to cost. The good ideas got stuck in between. That gap has largely closed.

The reason is simple: building goes much faster with AI in the loop. People call it vibe coding. The work shifts. Less typing code, more thinking clearly about what you want, then checking it is right. That is where the craft sits.

But mind you: in hospitality the answer is often not custom, but a good standard setup. We tell you honestly when you do not need something. You add AI where it pays off, not because you can.

That is the real change. Not that custom got a bit cheaper. But that a whole pile of “nice, but too expensive” ideas suddenly became possible, when you need them.

Where to start

Start small. Pick one job that hurts right now and where your data already lines up. Usually that is forecasting busy days or reading receipts. Prove it there first. Works? Then the rest. And keep your Odoo in order, because that is what AI stands on.

Recognize this from your own setup?

A 30-min scan turns hunches into a concrete view, what stays standard Odoo, what becomes custom, what doesn’t need code at all.
