Looking for a Unit4 alternative?
Unit4 (Business World/ERP and the Multivers line) is an established name, strong at larger organisations and the public sector. Whoever looks for an alternative usually does so for two reasons: it is enterprise-heavy and pricey for SMBs, and Multivers users sit on a package that is no longer being developed after the Exact acquisition. An NGO we spoke with - NIMD - weighed Unit4 but found it too expensive. Here are the options honestly side by side.
Odoo Gold Partner · Amsterdam · from enterprise-heavy to right-sized
What is the best alternative to Unit4?
It depends on your starting point. If you come from Unit4 Business World and want an established Dutch package, Exact or AFAS are logical candidates. If you come from Multivers - which is being phased out over time after the Exact acquisition - you have to move somewhere anyway. If you want one affordable platform for the whole business without an enterprise price tag, Odoo is usually the strongest alternative: the same breadth, natively integrated, at a fraction of the cost.
The best Unit4 alternatives, honestly scored
We are an Odoo partner, so we are not neutral. Unit4 is solid enterprise software; the question is whether its weight and price still fit an SMB organisation - and whether, coming from Multivers, you are better off moving straight to a package with a future.
| Alternative | Breadth on one platform | Dutch accounting | Price for SMB | Actively developed | Complexity | Short verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OdooTop pick | Yes - finance, projects, HR, operations native | Strong since the 2023 NL localisation | Max ~€20/user/month all modules | Yes, half-yearly releases | Low to mid | Best if you want enterprise breadth without the enterprise price |
| Exact | Partly (editions) | Strong, the NL standard | Mid, climbs per module | Yes | Mid | The safe Dutch route; also the owner of Multivers |
| AFAS | Broad (strong HRM/payroll) | Strong | Pricey as you grow | Yes | Mid to high | Broad Dutch suite, strong in HRM; rigid outside its own frames |
| AccountView | No - bookkeeping | Solid | Low | Limited (Visma heritage) | Low | Light bookkeeping route; not a platform for the whole business |
| Unit4 (stay) | Yes (Business World) | Good | High | Business World yes, Multivers no | High | Defensible at large organisations; heavy and pricey for SMB |

Which alternative fits which situation?
Briefly per option, so you can shorten the shortlist faster:
Odoo
Strongest if you want the breadth of Unit4 - finance, projects, HR, operations - but not the enterprise weight and price. An NGO we spoke with (NIMD) weighed Unit4 but found it too expensive; that is exactly where Odoo fits well: the same breadth, natively integrated, max ~€20/user/month for all modules.
Exact
The common Dutch route and at the same time the owner of Multivers. Solid and widely carried. If you come from Multivers, moving to Exact Online is the vendor-mapped route - but at its core it stays a bookkeeping package with extensions.
AFAS
Broad Dutch suite, rock solid in HRM and payroll. Rigid outside its own frames, and costs climb as you grow. See also our AFAS alternative.
AccountView
A light, affordable bookkeeping route within the Visma family. Fine if you come from the Multivers bookkeeping and only want to replace that - but it is a bookkeeping package, not a platform. See our AccountView alternative.
Unit4 (stay)
At a large organisation with the matching IT organisation, Business World is defensible. For SMBs the weight and price weigh heavily - and for Multivers users, staying is not an option in the long run, because it is no longer being developed.
What Unit4 does, and where it lives in Odoo
The breadth of Unit4 translates well to Odoo, but natively integrated and without an enterprise price tag:
| In Unit4 | In Odoo |
|---|---|
| General ledger and financial administration | Odoo Accounting, RGS chart, multi-company |
| VAT and filings | Native Dutch filings since the 2023 localisation |
| Projects and project accounting | Project with hours, budgets and post-calculation |
| HR and payroll | HR native; payroll via connection (Nmbrs/Loket) |
| Procurement and commitments | Purchase with approval flows |
| Reporting and consolidation | Dashboards and multi-company consolidation |
| Sales and invoicing | Quote to invoice on the same data |
| Inventory (Multivers line) | Native Inventory, real-time and valued |
| Customisation and workflows | Studio and automation, affordable to tailor |
Why companies look for a Unit4 alternative
Two reasons keep coming back. The first is price and weight: Unit4 Business World is built for large organisations, and you feel that in the price tag and the complexity. An NGO we spoke with - NIMD - weighed Unit4 seriously, but simply found it too expensive. The second reason sits with the Multivers line: after the Exact acquisition, Multivers is no longer actively developed, so users know they have to move somewhere over time.
Odoo: enterprise breadth without the enterprise price
Odoo covers the breadth Unit4 users are used to - finance, projects, HR, procurement, sales and inventory - but native on one data model and at a fraction of the cost. Since the Dutch localisation of Odoo Accounting in 2023 (RGS, VAT, UBL, audit file) the bookkeeping is fully-fledged for the Netherlands. Where Unit4 is heavy and admin-intensive, Odoo is affordable to tailor to your process - exactly the difference an NGO or SMB feels.
How do you choose?
Three rules of thumb. One: if you are a large organisation with your own IT department and the budget fits, staying on Business World is defensible. Two: if you come from Multivers, you have to move anyway - Exact Online is the vendor route, but this is the moment to also look at a platform. Three: if you want the breadth of Unit4 without the weight and price, Odoo is usually the strongest choice. Start from your biggest pain: for most Unit4 searchers it sits in the cost, and for Multivers users in the ending development.

Frequently asked questions about Unit4 alternatives
Is it true that Multivers is no longer being developed?
After the Exact acquisition, Multivers is no longer actively developed; Exact steers users toward Exact Online. Practically that means you sit on a package without a long-term future, so this is the moment to consciously choose a new platform instead of only following the vendor route.
Is Odoo not too light for what Unit4 does?
No. Odoo covers finance, projects, HR, procurement, sales and inventory natively, with multi-company consolidation and approval flows. For SMBs and many non-profits that is ample, at a fraction of the Unit4 cost.
Why did that NGO find Unit4 too expensive?
Unit4 Business World is built for large organisations; the licence and implementation costs scale accordingly. For an NGO like NIMD that did not weigh up against the budget - a broad but affordable platform like Odoo then fits better.
Can I migrate my Unit4 or Multivers data?
Yes. We migrate the opening balance, relations, open items, projects and history where useful; old financial years are archived as exports. In the fit-gap we also map the surrounding processes so it connects in Odoo.
Is Unit4 bad software?
No - it is solid enterprise software that earns its place at large organisations. The reason to compare is fit: for SMBs it is often too heavy and too expensive, and the Multivers line no longer has active development.
Enterprise breadth without the enterprise price?
We are happy to think along about which alternative fits your situation - whether you come from Business World or Multivers, and whether that becomes Exact, AFAS or Odoo. Honest, with the cost on the table.
