Microsoft Dynamics to Odoo migration cases

Microsoft Dynamics - whether Business Central, NAV or the older AX line - is a serious ERP platform that can do a lot. For the SMB segment we serve, the problem is usually not what Dynamics can do, but what it costs to configure and maintain that functionality.

Clients who switch to Odoo do so for various reasons. A running implementation at a large Microsoft partner stalled on cost or timeline. The licensing math became prohibitive as the team grew. Or the customization in Dynamics became so complex that upgrades grew increasingly painful.

A Dynamics-to-Odoo migration needs attention for two things. One: data extraction - Dynamics databases are rich but not always clean, so we plan time for cleanup. Two: integration with the Microsoft stack that often stays (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint). Both are standard for us, with SSO and Graph API where needed.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why do companies migrate from Dynamics to Odoo?

Usually three reasons: total cost of ownership (licensing + partner hours on Dynamics typically run 3-5x higher than Odoo for comparable scope), implementation speed (Odoo goes live 2-3x faster at SMB scope), and freedom of customization without upgrade pain.

  • Can I keep Outlook, Teams and SharePoint alongside Odoo?

Yes. Single sign-on via Microsoft Entra (Azure AD), Outlook integration for calendar and email, and SharePoint document linking are standard. Microsoft tools stay; only the ERP changes.

  • How long does a Dynamics to Odoo migration take?

For an SMB with 30-80 users, expect 5-8 months. With more Dynamics customization it gets longer, because we have to review each extension to see whether Odoo handles it as standard or whether we need to rebuild.

  • Can we bring our Dynamics reports across?

Not one-to-one - Dynamics reporting (Power BI, Jet Reports) is replaced by Odoo Studio + Spreadsheets, or by external BI connected to the Odoo database. The data comes across; the reporting layer is rebuilt.

  • Is Odoo a serious alternative to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

For SMBs up to 250 employees: yes, broadly. For heavy financial consolidations across multiple entities, or strict Microsoft-stack-only IT policy, Business Central remains the more logical choice. The comparison page below goes deeper into the exact differences.
